Ancient Aliens S11E01 English Subtitle and Review : Exploring the "Pyramids of Antarctica"
Can you believe we are now in the eleventh season of Ancient Aliens and the seventh calendar year of the series? Due to History Channel's renumbering, what should be season 9 is now season 11. The last episode of Ancient Aliens aired seven months ago, and I must admit that I have enjoyed the break from the program's quasi-historical fantasies.
Interestingly, the show's stars have been unusually quiet, with few public claims or new books. Are they now primarily professional Ancient Aliens pundits? If one can be a professional political pundit or sports commentator, being a professional alien commentator is indeed possible.
Each season, I vow to make my reviews shorter and less detailed, yet every year I'm proven wrong due to the sheer volume of misinformation Ancient Aliens disseminates. Let's see how S11E01 "Pyramids of Antarctica" unfolds.
Segment 1: The Teaser
The teaser is classic History Channel fare: Nazis! Antarctica! UFOs! Pyramids! Giorgio Tsoukalos with even bigger hair and poor lighting that makes him look washed out. Ancient Aliens is back, not necessarily better, but definitely bigger. The opening titles now feature shinier graphics, perhaps to mask the ever-tightening circle of repetitive content.
The segment begins with a brief history and geography of Antarctica. Andrew Collins, the first pundit of the season, offers little of interest. Series regulars Jonathan Young and David Childress, now sporting a new black wardrobe, agree that Antarctica is mysterious. Tsoukalos notes that there's a lot of ice there.
The show recaps several internet stories, some serious and some hoaxes, depicting natural rock formations that resemble pyramids from certain angles.
This material first appeared in 2012, which I covered back then. Jonathan White shows satellite images of a random blob he interprets as a pyramid ground plan, though there's no evidence to support this. Collins claims ancient humans lived in Antarctica, and the show recycles the old claim that pyramids emit energy beams to create a wireless energy grid.
Tsoukalos questions how ancient people came up with the idea of building pyramids and wonders if the original world pyramid is in Antarctica. However, the show fails to explain how these "pyramids" are visible on the ice surface despite the miles of ice between the land and ice surface. Are the pyramids as big as mountains, or are they just mountains? You can guess which one I believe.
Segment 2: Flash-Frozen Mammoths and Pole-Shift Theory
The second segment starts with the "mystery" of the flash-frozen mammoth, which Michael Dennin, an actual scientist, accepts as true. I debunked this claim recently, pointing out translation errors where the "buttercups" in the mammoths' mouths were actually greens.
The show endorses Charles Hapgood's pole-shift theory, suggesting Antarctica and Siberia moved from warmer parts of the Earth to the poles. This theory, disproven by plate tectonics, remains a favorite among fringe theorists.
The show also uses the 1531 Oronteus Finaeus map to "prove" an ice-free Antarctica was known in the 1500s. Collins questions how this is possible, but the map is inaccurate and exaggerated from Magellan's report of Tierra del Fuego.
Segment 3: Edfu Texts and Atlantis
The third segment shows the producers have read Graham Hancock’s Magicians of the Gods. They use the Edfu texts to describe a disaster they believe struck ancient Egypt.
The texts allege that Edfu was the first temple, built by the gods, and that the gods retreated to a sacred island to ascend to the sky. This claim, appearing in Eve E.
A. Reymond’s 1969 book The Mythical Origin of the Egyptian Temple, differs from Hancock’s version but aligns with the Middle Kingdom text The Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor. William Henry and Hancock both identify this story with Atlantis and Antarctica.
Segment 4: Nazis in Antarctica
In the fourth segment, Ancient Aliens shifts focus to Nazis, claiming Hitler sent Thule Society members to Antarctica in 1938 during the Third Antarctic Expedition. The show suggests they created an underground base in a couple of months.
David Wilcock speculates the Nazis discovered Lovecraft’s Mountains of Madness, using ancient technological cities as a Nazi colony. Childress adds false claims about a U.S. expedition in the 1940s, derived from F. Amadeo Giannini's book The Worlds Beyond the Poles.
Segment 5: Government Conspiracy
The fifth segment claims world governments are conspiring to keep visitors out of Antarctica to hide alien artifacts. Linda Moulton Howe shares secondhand stories about anomalous events involving military personnel in Antarctica, without evidence. Childress links these events to more fiction about Admiral Byrd flying through a hole in the Antarctic ice to an underground world.
Segment 6: Melting Ice and Underground Cities
The final segment discusses the increase in Antarctic ice overall and the loss of ice in the western part of the continent. Collins finds this "strange," and Wilcock claims aliens' underground cities are melting the ice. The show reiterates the claim of lost Antarctic cities without providing any evidence, suggesting they might be found if the ice melts. So, hooray for global warming?
Conclusion: A Blend of Fantasy and Speculation
Ancient Aliens continues to mix pseudoscience and science fiction, now expanding into a lifestyle brand with conventions like Alien Con 2016. Despite the questionable content, the show remains a staple for fans of ancient alien theories. Whether you enjoy the series for its speculative entertainment or its unintentional comedy, Ancient Aliens shows no signs of slowing down.
